2023 Study Summary

Overview#

  • The learning efficiency this year is not very high. I am not focused enough and lack self-discipline. I am always distracted/restless/unable to concentrate.
    • Confusion about my future life: which city to settle in, how to handle relationships with family, future career planning.
    • Other topics of concern: how to better manage social interactions, how to improve learning efficiency.
  • Next steps
    • Find a career that allows me to explore different lifestyles.
    • Write down specific concerns about my family, think of solutions, and talk directly to them.
    • Try career planning consultations.
    • Use time management software TickTick to track my time.

Dress#

  • I used to not pay much attention to dressing, but I hurriedly caught up at the end of this year! Learning how to dress is also about finding joy and understanding others' tastes in daily life.
  • The main sources of reference are Male Fashion Advice on Reddit and fashion influencers I have collected on Bilibili.
  • Insights
    • Now I look at clothes in the following order: style, fabric, and how they match my existing clothes.
    • From the perspective of fabric, the cost-effectiveness of many popular domestic and foreign brands/chain stores is not very high. Knowing some basics about fabric and the prices of leading products in the industry is useful for evaluating the price of clothes.
      • For example, Bosideng, Canada Goose, Lululemon, Uniqlo, which focus on using certain materials.

Career#

  • Work-Life-Balance without a good system is short-lived; the system here must be trustless, without the need to trust or rely on your +1 +2.
  • Junior learns to manage up, laying the groundwork for becoming a senior and managing juniors in the future.
  • Design review >> code review; reaching consensus is more important than how to achieve it (analogous to crypto protocol).
  • R&D must have a good product manager; no human errors, only bad products (from "Design of everyday things"). Engineers who underestimate product experience design are not good engineers.
  • What not to do in code review?
    • E2E test case -> should be done in design review.
    • Any nitpick like code style -> should be enforced by automatic tools in CI/CD.
  • What to do in code review?
    • Maintainability
      • Module tree & information hiding & comments.
      • Integration & unit tests & code not covered by tests.
    • Observability
      • Logging levels, traces, metrics -> are they actionable ???
    • Results of benchmark/stress/performance tests, if any.
    • Satisfying & acceptable >> perfectionism.

Web3#

  • Many people say it's a scam/buzzword.
  • But based on my learning and understanding so far this year, I feel that it is meaningful, although the entire industry is still in its infancy.
  • Pain points of web2 and what web3 might solve
    • Content moderation: Once content is on the chain, there will always be a way to see the original content, which cannot be deleted or tampered with.
    • Data ownership: Easier platform/ecosystem migration, data won't be completely lost if an account is banned on a web2 platform. At the same time, data privacy can be improved, and user profiles that do not require KYC can be naturally anonymized.
    • Reward for creators/tokenomics: In general, the distribution of benefits in web3 products is more inclined towards content creators, which motivates good content creators to interact in the web3 ecosystem.
  • Apart from the technical difficulties, there are still the following challenges
    • Currently, most web3 users are more interested in speculative value rather than the actual utility value of the products. Gaming and DeFi are the hottest in web3 for this reason.
      • Many users don't understand anything and only care about making money. When Binance and FTX have problems, the public perception is to be cautious with crypto/web3, without realizing that these two are fundamentally centralized and have nothing to do with web3/blockchain.
      • On the other hand, web3 social development, which values real users rather than speculative users, is not going well. However, social/crowd-sourced products are actually very suitable for decentralization.
    • Financing
      • Some teams have the mentality of making a quick profit and then running away.
      • AI currently attracts the attention of major investors, and web3 seems to struggle to attract funding without integrating AI.
    • Web3 based on blockchain itself requires a certain level of user understanding.
    • Government regulation issues.

Podcast#

Why#

  • To protect my eyes and obtain information without using my eyes.
  • To make better use of my time during walks and commutes.
  • The main distribution method of information flow today is recommendation algorithms, but they have the following problems:
    • Echo Chamber: If used well, it can quickly find people with the same mindset. However, if not controlled properly, it can lead to a narrow understanding of the thoughts of other psychological groups, preventing a comprehensive understanding of issues and phenomena.
    • Web2: Platforms with recommendation algorithms, such as Xiaohongshu and Douyin, primarily monetize through advertisements. The recommended information contains a lot of unwanted content.
    • Fragmented content: Many things have not been processed and refined through thinking. Podcasts provide more in-depth discussions and ideas.

Subscriptions#

  • Silicon Valley 101
    • Format: The host interviews industry leaders on specific topics.
    • Although mainly targeted at Silicon Valley investors, I highly recommend it. The discussions are both deep and broad, and the host has insights that are helpful for understanding future trends in the world.
    • Interestingly, I have received recommendations for this podcast from different channels around me.
  • Web3 101
    • It is a subprogram of Silicon Valley 101 with the same format, focusing on crypto/web3-related topics. It is full of practical knowledge and can be rewarding for beginners.
  • Zonghengsihai (Across the Four Seas)
    • The host shares thoughts and opinions after reading a book. Each episode is packed with information and is quite long, suitable for serious listening and learning. I personally highly recommend it.
  • Planet Money: Understand the money and the world
    • Each episode is a discussion on a different economic topic by different hosts, covering the world. The episodes are relatively short, providing both insights and relaxation.
  • Others also recommended
    • Zero to One: Interviews with founders from various industries.
    • Questioning Youth
    • Huzuo Huzuo (忽左忽右)
